Reflections on Personal Boundaries and Achievements

Reflections on Personal Boundaries and Achievements

I often ponder upon my boundaries, my abilities, and my achievements. Have they changed since I grew up, or graduated from a business school, or gotten married? Does moving to a first world country, on a dependent visa, make any of these any easier or more complicated?

Equal Opportunities: Reality or Illusion?

The Concept of Equal Opportunities

They talk about equal opportunities, but is there really anything like that in this real world? Or is it only for the few?

A Matter of perspective

Maybe it’s a perspective, a rather construed one; where I see what I want to see, where I judge my prospects as per my convenience- or for the lack of it.

The Resilienceof Women from Developing Nations

Not Vulnerable, But Resilient

Don’t get me wrong! Not every girl from a developing nation is vulnerable or helpless. On the contrary she is rather resilient in her approach.

Quintessential Go-Getters

She is a quintessential go- getter, although may not be by choice always. Many of us find light in the dark and achieve our dreams.

Unfavorable Circumstances

However, there are many who due to unfavorable circumstances, can’t.

The Trapped Fly Analogy

The Trapped Fly

I see the latter as a fly trapped in a house for days at stretch, buzzing around like a prom queen in her silver stilettos.

Overstayed Welcome

But once that fly has overstayed her welcome and is discovered, her joyous life is stunted.

Quest for Escape

She desperately tries to find that one opening, whirring and pounding on the glass sill, in her quest to escape; her dramatic emancipation.

Unparallel Grit

Have you ever seen such a fly escape? If you have, you would know what I mean. But, if you have ever tried to squat such a fly, then you would know it’s a battle not many have won. The sheer grit to survive is unparallel.

The Journey of Making it

Starting with Low Self-Esteem

They may have very low self-esteem left by the time they reach the pinnacle of this journey, but there is a lot of exhilaration too;

Finding Different Paths

But most find solace in raising offspring, in supporting families, in half-baked careers, or in taking up courses in hope of boosting their careers.

Achieving success

But, it’s not always that grim. Like I said earlier, some of us do ‘make it’ big.

The Personal Victory

Because no matter what, in her mind, she’s ‘made it’!

The Ongoing Struggle

Initial Freedom

She appears free at first, but like a fly’s flight, this freedom is temporary.

Recurring Traps

She’s often trapped, whether by her own flight patterns or her constant fight for external validation.

Lasting Imapact

The cycle continues, perpetuated by that lingering low self- esteem, never truly achieving complete freedom.

The Vicious Circle

Trapped in a cycle

Evidently, it’s a vicious circle that one may find themselves in.

Using the Brain

But the key is to keep one’s heart aside, and only use their brain.

The Heart's Dilemma

Because had a fly listened to her heart, she would still be merrily sitting on that sticky, gooey, delicious sweet and never bothered about been squatted.

Embracing the Challenge

But what fun would that be?!
This final question encapsulates the spirit of embracing challenges and growth, despite the difficulties faced along the way.
